Workbooks often make reference to files that are stored on your local computer; for example, if the workbook uses file-based data sources, such as Excel, Access, Tableau Extracts, and text files, or uses background images. You can save your workbook along with a copy of these local files collected into a single file called a packaged workbook. Using a packaged workbook makes it easy to share your work with others.

Save a Packaged Workbook

Select File > Save As. In the Save As dialog box, in the Save as type list, select Tableau Packaged Workbooks (*twbx).

You can distinguish between workbooks and packaged workbooks by the twbx extension.

Share Your Work with Others

A packaged workbook is a single file that contains a copy of all the referenced local files, so you can easily share it by e-mail, a shared file system, or by publishing it to Tableau Server.

You can gain access to the packaged files at any time by unpackaging the workbook.
